The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia
If you have ever wondered what people with dyslexia experience on a daily basis, you should check out this film, The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia.
Inspired by his son, Dylan’s struggle with dyslexia, film director James Redford took to the screen to help people understand what dyslexia is and what kind of challenges dyslexics face every day.
The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia follows the stories of 3 different families as they face challenges such as finding their own unique ways of earning, working with the school system and trying to keep up with other students.
The documentary follows Dylan as he prepares to enter into his first semester of college where he faces his own self-doubts and being waitlisted for his top college choice. He ultimately overcomes both through a great deal of hard work and perseverance.
Redford also looks at the story of 6th grader Skye who became so anxious about going to school, she would make herself sick. They eventually found that she was dyslexic and her anxiety came from her inability to read. After her diagnosis, she and her parents thought that they would gain support of her school, however that was not the case. She eventually left her school and went to a school specializing in dyslexia. It is certainly a powerful example of how misunderstood dyslexia and people who it are.
